21 Feb Cherry Blossom Festival in DC
Want to do something uniquely Washington, DC while you are living here for your college internship? The National Cherry Blossom Festival is a Washington, D. C. spring tradition. This year will be the 104th celebration of the Cherry Blossom Festival in DC celebrating the friendship between the United States and Japan.
It was on March 27, 1912 when Mayor Yukio Ozaki of Tokyo brought a gift of Japanese cherry trees to the city of Washington, D.C. Today the flowering cherry trees capture the beauty of the landscape of cherry trees near the Washington DC historical monuments and national mall area. The National Park Service is predicting the trees will peak around April 4 giving interns and other spectators a gorgeous view of the Tidal Basin surrounding the Jefferson Memorial.
The blossoms, depending on the weather (frost, wind etc) will last five to ten days. The best way for those living in DC to enjoy the blossoms is to bike or walk to the Tidal Basin. There you can enjoy a stroll or a paddle boat ride while taking in the beauty and aroma of the flowering blossoms.
So when do all the festivities begin? The opening ceremony and free concert at the historic Warner Theater begin on March 25. The next three weeks include the popular Kite Festival, the famous National Cherry Blossom Festival Parade and conclude with The Waterfront Fireworks Festival on April 15. More than 700,000 people will travel to Washington, DC to enjoy the Cherry Blossom Festival in DC.
As an intern, you should take the time to enjoy the free activities that are offered by the city for your enjoyment. Many restaurants and bars will offer a variety of cherry blossom cheer.
